Slow screen with most themes

I had it working well for months, but something changed and now most themes seem to have a 10 to 20s delay, in the clock and in the hw info shown. The basic "3.5inchTheme2" works well, as do a few others, but for most themes it's just slow.
Didn't see any relevant error messages.
HW revision: B, HW sub-revision: 2577, on arch linux. Could it be an updated python, libraries?? I just don't understand why some themes work well...
