Preflight Checklist

  • I use the latest version of YouTube Music (Application).
  • I have searched the issue tracker for a feature request that matches the one I want to file, without success.

Problem Description

Sometimes when playing or skipping a song (can't remember if it occurs otherwise) the synced lyrics will be that of the previous song, without refreshing to the new ones. The lyrics update after some time, but it can take a while.

Proposed Solution

Would it be possible to get at least an optional manual refresh button for when this occurs.

Alternatives Considered

Investigating and fixing the underlying issue would of course be ideal, but a simple manual refresh button would suffice for now.

Additional Information

This has been an issue ever since multiple lyrics providers became a feature, and is not new.

The lyrics update after some time, but it can take a while.

Does it take more than 2-3 seconds?

It definitely takes longer than 2-3 seconds.

I haven't kept track, but it feels like it can take up to a minute or so. I'm pretty sure at least one time even going back/forward songs in the queue didn't refresh it either.
Sometimes it feels like changing the provider can make it refresh for all of them, but not sure as it's been quite inconsistent.

I suspect the UI doesn't update whilst it is searching for the lyrics?
If that is not the case, then I doubt a manual refresh will help, because the problem would be with how we detect the song change.

Can you confirm, after the big delay, does the UI instantly show the new lyrics, or does it show that it is loading?
Scratch that, can you reliably reproduce this issue?

I haven't been able to intentionally reproduce it, but it does happen relatively often, seemingly by random. Whenever it does happen, and it finally refreshes the lyrics, it swaps to the new ones on the fly.

I doubt it would take that long to search for the lyrics, when usually it only takes a second, but I also don't know about the inner workings if there's an error or timeout with the request, or if there are any rate limits etc.

Well I'll be damned, I'll have to resort to speculative fixes then 💀

ig this can wait for after #3162 ?

Yeah, it's not a high priority feature/fix, just mildly annoying whenever it does happen.
