VS Code added support for pre-release versions of the extensions: https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_63#_pre-release-extensions. We should look into this, as -- together with #10483 -- it would allow us to remove the entirety of our version checking and download code.

Looks like this only works for extensions that specify "engine": "1.63"(the latest version). Normally we'd wait for 1.64 (to support the latest two versions [*]), but that will only come out in February. Should we wait, or should we upgrade now, to keep up with the "try fit in breaking changes" around the holidays idea? I'm aching to remove some code 😅.

[*] I think this came up after Arch or some distro delayed updating for a couple of days.
